Join us for a night of live acts and some of out city's top dj's bring the party to you with a selection of Hip Hop, Funk, Soul, Boogie, Breaks and more.

***KEEP SYDNEY OPEN***
WE SUPPORT SAFE NIGHTS IN A GLOBAL CITY. WE SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC. OUR MISSION IS TO KEEP SYDNEY OPEN!

In February, 2014 the NSW State Government imposed a suite of restrictions on inner city venues including a 1.30am lockout. In response, Keep Sydney Open was formed by a variety of key Sydney live music and performance venues, cultural organisations, artists and music industry stakeholders, joining together to highlight the unfair imposition these tough laws have had on those who work and play in this city.

Crucial live music venues in Sydney have closed, several hundred jobs have been lost and the magic around our city is fading. All this for a minimal impact on violence, which was shown to be in decline since small-bar licenses were granted in 2008.

We have distinctly chosen to avoid any beer-barns, alcohol companies and liquor industry groups from our alliance, because we believe that there are better things about nightlife than just the consumption and sale of alcohol.

This is not about entertainment vs safety. We believe that both can be achieved simultaneously, and that our legislators have an obligation to preserve freedoms for law-abiding citizens while making a night out safer.

***THE CHOP***
The Chop is an evening dedicated to showcasing the talents of beat makers/producers in live performances.

The Chop is a night being held at Play bar in Sydney’s design, music and fashion hub of Surry Hills on a monthly basis. The Chop is an evening dedicated to showcasing the talents of up and coming, as well as already established beat makers/producers. The call has been sent out to all bedroom bangers, mpc masters, beat junkies and production prodigies to bring their finest cuts of A grade beat and they have answered with cleavers in tow.

All performances will be live and butchered to order for your audio taste buds.

Along with show casing these talented artists, The Chop will be supported by some of Sydney’s finest DJ’s. They will spinning the most mouth watering assortment of funk, soul, boogie and hip hop to accompany these talented purveyors of cold cuts and dope beats.

Play bar is an underground urban speak easy in Surry Hills frequented by everyone from corporate city slickers looking for a street style getaway to the cool kids of inner Sydney, which makes it the perfect venue for The Chop.

This is a free event designed to promote the little known beat scene in Sydney and it is well worth stepping into this musical meat market to see the range of produce.
Falling off the bone every last Saturday of the month.

***PLAY BAR***
INTRODUCING PLAYBAR SYDNEY… JUMPIN’ ONTO THE SCENE IN 2013’… PLAY IT RIGHT SYD…

Nestled in the once decrepit & defunkt lower west-syde of Surry Hills, a new flowering small bar district is emerging. PLAY BAR SYDNEY is housed in the old “Chess Discount Store”, which tale be told in the 1930’s was also an old Chinese opium den (though fortunately you no longer need your pipes and lamps).

Upon locating the 4 moons, you enter through a beautiful, large black timber door and are led down an unassuming stair into the one of the best kept secrets in Sydney.

The decor looks decidedly like it once belonged in old factories, with old iron crank tables and trestles. Decorated with skate decks & a fresh graf collab, courtesy Beastman & Numskull. The bar is warmly lit with cool old incandescent bulbs, wall washes & candles, that enhance the exposed raw brick & wooden rafters. A pair of 1200’s with a ghetto-blaster fold-back sit in the corner & an epic old skool hiphop montage in the amenities. PLAYBAR’s look shifts entirely from so many of the clean cut or prohibition style bars that exist now in the CBD, into a more old-flava, London underground style venue. We play James Brown, funk, broken-beat, hippity-hop, soul, reggae, drum n’ bass and proper house…. & we play it on records.

The bar serves a spin on some classic cocktails, spirits, wines and beers (local & craft)… We have also launched a Southern Americana style menu, courtesy from the guys behind “The Nighthawk Diner”, and it’s all mixed together with some tasty tunes.
Our goal is to provide a space for the community to bring people together who share a love of art & music.
